Princess of Jordan Visits The Cancer Center
at Milford Regional Medical Center
Milford Regional Medical Center and Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center (DFBWCC) hosted a visit recently from Her Royal Highness Princess Dina Mired of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in her role as Director-General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and Honorary co-President of the Global Task Force on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and Control (GTF.CCC). Princess Dina was joined by Dr. Mahmoud Sarhan, CEO of King Hussein Cancer Center (HKCC); Dr. Felicia Knaul, Director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative (HGEI) and the Secretariat of the GTF.CCC; Zaid Bitar, Head of International Development at KHCF and members of the HGEI staff. The visit included a tour of The Cancer Center at Milford Regional as well as a series of presentations and discussion between the GTF.CCC team, Francis M. Saba, CEO of Milford Regional and representatives of Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center.
The GTF.CCC’s mandate is to design, implement and evaluate innovative strategies for expanding access to cancer prevention, detection and care to developing countries. Of the 7.6 million cancer deaths in the world in 2008, approximately 63% occurred in developing countries (GLOBOCAN 2008). Princess Dina’s visit to Milford sought to promote an exchange of knowledge and expertise on cancer delivery, and learn about various aspects of satellite development that provides advanced cancer care in a community setting.
“I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to visit the Milford site,” Princess Dina stated. “It is truly a healing sanctuary. We found the innovative practices at Milford very insightful, and we hope to apply several elements that fit our reality at the King Hussein Cancer Center and Jordan.”
Francis M. Saba, CEO of Milford Regional, expressed his hope that the visit proved beneficial to their mission.
“It was our honor to host Her Highness Princess Dina Mired of Jordan along with her colleagues in their ongoing efforts to develop the business, administrative, infrastructural and technical dimensions necessary to bring cancer care to remote regions in Jordan and throughout the world,” he stated. “Hopefully, the tour of our cancer center and discussions pertaining to the successful partnership between Milford Regional and DFBWCC in offering state-of-the-art cancer care in a community setting provided useful information and strategies that can be beneficial to their mission moving forward.”
